TOP things to do in Zakynthos. We love Zakynthos ♥ We have already been there 4 times and today, just 1 week later our wonderful vacation in the island, I want to share you my top things to do in Zakynthos. What in my opinion is absolutely a must, what I love to do. Here, if you like, you can find some other impressions from last year.
Zakynthos is one of the Ionian islands of Greece, still without the huge tourism, especially in May and June, my favourite months. Famous above all for the stunning Shipwreck, the most photographed beach of the Mediterranean, it has many other incredible beaches and beautiful landscapes, mostly in the northern part of the island.
#1. Porto Limnionas
Porto Limnionas is a small fiord in the northwest part of Zakynthos. The water is just incredible, as you can see in the pictures below. I can not find other words. Here there is a equipped beach in form of many shelfs; with trees, beach umbrellas and comfortable sunbeds for just 3€/day. There is also a traditional Taverna with great quality food and beautiful see view. You can have a lunch there or order and enjoy it under your beach umbrella. As you prefer!
Other beloved beaches are around the Xigia area and Makris Gialos, in the northeast part.. In Makris Gialos, I also recommend to visit the Pilarinos Taverna for tasting a delicious homemade Moussaka and their brand new hand craft LEVANTE Beer.
#2. Hicking above the cliff of Shipwreck
Shipwreck is the most photographed spot of the island. Definitely you need to visit it. You can reach the beach only by boat, with a daily boat trip from all ports of the island or with your own. After 4 years, I prefer to see it from the white cliffs, just because I do not like beaches if full of people.
Also here the sea is breathtaking and, in my opinion, the best way to see it, is from above. You can reach the cliffs by car in less than 10 minutes from the village of Volimes and then just walk for other 8-10 minutes along a tiny trail. Please, be careful, because it is quite exposed; perfect for taking unforgettable pictures but very risky!
#3. Have a dinner at Bassia Restaurant
Not so far from Zakynthos Town, at Bassia Restaurant you will find a lovely atmosphere thanks to the modern and clean arrangement and enjoy a delicious meal, made with passion, originality and fresh local ingredients. I really suggest you to have a dinner during the sundown, the best intimate and suggestive moment. I loved it so much! I could have stayed there for hours (pictures were taken in different moments and light conditions).
Food was so delicious that I totally forgot to take a picture, I am sorry. However I can tell you I chose their Zakynthian rabbit with home fries. Just heaven! In the menu there is also a fish and vegetarian selection that combine traditional cuisine with a special touch. A place I am waiting to visit again…♥ Definitely high recommend!
#4. Boat trip to Marathonissi to discover Caretta Caretta Turtles.
The Caretta Caretta is a specimen turtle that is still living in the Mediterranean Sea and we can try to meet it in Zakynthos since it spawns along the beaches of the Laganas Gulf, in the southern part. I have to confess you that I do not like at all this part of Zakynthos because it has too noisy night life and its and sandy beaches, in my opinion, are not comparable with the northern pebble beaches. To discover the Turtles I can suggest to take a daily boat or rent a small one in Agios Sotis Port for reaching the small island of Marathonissi, one of the places where Turtles got to breed. During the short trip you will see them into the sea!
#5. Have a drink at Rostos Rooftop bar in Zakynthos town
The Rostos Rooftop bar is an exclusive lounge bar with sea&city view in Zakynthos town. Despite the ugly old stylish hotel where it takes place, the Rostos Rooftop bar has a fresh and modern character. You can have just a drink in the cozy blue sofas area or enjoy the pool with view to the city center.
